Collapsible Towers
In order to increase structural rigidity, early wakeboard towers were welded together without joints and could not be collapsed. This posed a problem for those desiring to store their boat in a garage. Most garage openings are 6′ 11″. Some boat dry-docks and water garages also have height limitations. As a result, as engineering advanced, most wakeboard tower manufacturers now offer either partially or fully collapsible towers that are just as rigid as their fixed counterparts.
Fixed Towers
Non-collapsible fixed towers are now dinosaurs, and most companies have discontinued non-collapsible towers.
Partially Collapsible
Many of the two-piece swooped towers are partially collapsible. Usually the goal is to collapse the tower at the mid point in order to make the collapsing process easy and to preserve the style while clearing the 6′ 11″ garage limitation while the boat is on the trailer. With some partially collapsible towers it is necessary to add additional joints on the front tower legs for certain boat models and trailers in order to get lower than 6′ 11″. Some models have this “low profile” option available. An example of the partially collapsible wakeboard tower is the Skylon Classic Swoop.
Fully Collapsible
Some boats sit so high on their trailer that the only tower that will fit within a standard garage opening is a fully collapsible tower. These towers are designed from the ground up for minimum clearance. Most universal towers are fully collapsible. Examples include the Skylon Swoop Pro XT, the Titan Series I, II, and II.5 tower models.
