How To Buy Wakeboarding Wetsuits: Extend Your Season

September 20th, 2007 by Spencer

Selecting the correct wetsuit for your climate will ensure warmer and longer riding throughout the season. The three most common types of suits used by wakeboarders are the Thermal Top, Shorty or Full Wetsuit, and the Drysuit.

Thermal Tops (the upper half of a wetsuit) are primarily used when air temperatures are cool and water temperatures are 70 degrees F and above.

Wetsuits work best when water temperatures range from 50 to 70 degrees F. Wetsuits range from a full suit(body, arms, and legs fully covered) a long sleeve shorty (long sleeves with cut off legs) and short sleeve shorty’s (short sleeves and legs). The science behind wetsuits is simple. They trap warm air between the neoprene and the rider’s skin creating a warm layer of protection. The thickness of the suit will vary depending on the temperature of the water. Wakeboarders prefer a 3/2 thickness to stay at a comfortable temperature while riding but to not hinder mobility.

Drysuits are designed for the coldest water a rider can stand with temperatures ranging from 45 to 65 degrees F. The protective suite will allow the rider to stay dry enabling them to wear layers of clothing underneath to keep their body temperature at a comfortable level.
